Brenda Petrie Psychotherapy & Consulting Psychological Services in Drayton Valley
Brenda Petrie is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists and sole practitioner of Brenda Petrie Psychotherapy & Consulting. She has a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counselling. Her area of study was in marriage and family therapy. She has a Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education with a focus in special education. Brenda also has a certificate in Early Childhood Education.
Her services include individual, couple, and family counselling for children, teens and adults. She offers psychoeducational assessments for children between the ages of 6 and 16. She is available for consultation for schools, teachers, and students to assist with academic or behavioural concerns. She also offers clinical supervision to provisionally registered psychologists and masters level practicum students.
Brenda is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. EMDR encourages the client to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the traumatic experience. Counselling for Adults
Like all therapy, adult counselling begins by building rapport. Once trust is established, clients can begin working toward achieving their desired results. Brenda can help you overcome many challenges such as anxiety/phobias/panic disorders, depression/suicidal ideation, traumatic experiences, emotional regulation, self-worth issues, grief/loss, stress management, work concerns, ADHD, life transitions, relationship issues, chronic pain, and sleep problems.
Counselling for Adolescents
The teenage years are a time of self-discovery, individualization, and growth. It can be very challenging to manage all the changes and expectations. Brenda values the importance of creating a trusting relationship to assist with the creation and achievement of reasonable goals. Parents are typically asked to partake in the first session. She can assist with ADHD, Emotional Regulation, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning/Behavioural Issues, Career/School, Relationship Issues, Depression, Sleep Issues, Separated/Divorced/Blended Families, Grief/Loss, Suicidal Ideation, Self-Harm, Traumatic Experiences, and Self-Worth/Confidence.
Counselling for Children
If your child is having learning or behavioural difficulties, Brenda can assess their situation and offer family therapy, play therapy and other treatments. An initial parent session is required so she can obtain a complete picture of your child's struggles and your concerns. This session may involve a discussion of your child's developmental history, their past and present behavioral and emotional patterns, big life changes and current stressors. Together a treatment goal for your child's therapy will be established.

One of Brenda's Favourite Quotations:
“I am more and more convinced that our happiness or unhappiness depends far more on the way we meet the events of life, than on the nature of these events themselves.” - Baron Alexander von Humboldt
